About Band

KALABASH - is a jazz sextet, unique in its use of the steeldrum as one of the lead voices in a jazz ensemble. The group explores the layering of rich jazz harmonies over the folk and popular rhythms of the Caribbean, combining in the Kalabash frontline, the exotic sound of the steeldrum with the more traditional tonalities of sax, flute and clarinet. The result of this fusion of American jazz stylings and Caribbean rhythmic flavours, is a scintillating contemporary jazz expression.

Since the release of the band's first CD in 2001, Kalabash has established itself as one of the finest jazz fusion ensembles in Toronto, with a reputation for captivating, virtuosic performances. Live performance highlights include appearances at: the Downtown Jazz Festival in Toronto; the Beaches Jazz Festival in Toronto; Essence Magazine's Music Festival at the Super Dome in New Orleans; the Barbados Jazz Festival; the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto with famed Jamaican folklorist and jazz pianist, Marjorie Whylie.

Kalabash has also been featured in a 1-hour TV documentary on Toronto BRAVO TV's "Jazzman" series. This series was syndicated and the show aired extensively on the "BET on Jazz" channel in the US and Internationally. The band also taped two jazz videos of original music at the BRAVO TV studios in Toronto. These have since been aired widely in Canada.
